Education Grant: what is it? This is a monetary aid given to financially deserving students to be used in paying for their education. This differs from scholarships since scholarships are given to people who excel in a particular a field like sports.
Educational grants on the other hand are given based on financial capability. How does it differ from an educational loan? Well, if you get a loan you have to repay it back in the future depending on the terms of your loan. When you avail of a grant you don’t have to pay it back. The government is usually the one responsible for providing grants although you can also get grants from private institutions, organizations and even your university. Let’s take a look at some of the educational grants provided by the government.
Pell Grant
This is a federal grant that addresses post secondary educational concerns and was named after Senator Claiborne Pell. The main beneficiaries of this grant sponsored by the Department of Education are students coming from economically challenged families. To qualify for this grant a person has to show proof of family annual income that should not exceed $20,000. The approving body would be the U.S. Department of Education who would conduct the necessary evaluations before approval.
Federal Grants for Education
Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant -This grant which is also handled by the U.S. Department of Education is given out to students who are needy and belong to the lowest income family bracket. If you wish to pursue a post secondary education and have the necessary qualifications to avail for this grant then you can use this at any of the participating 4,000 post secondary institutions across the states.
Academic Competitive Grant
In order for you to qualify for this grant you must already be a recipient of the Pell Grant. In a way, this grant adds financial support to what you are already getting. This is a relatively new grant which was first launched during the school year 2006-2007. Students who qualify for this grant will get $750 on their first year of college and $1300 on the succeeding year.
